Media Surveillance

I see the media as a major part of our world today. Media influences our culture on a day to day basis in terms of the food we buy, the clothes we wear, the opinions we create and possibly even the way we strive to be. Media comes in many forms, such as television (which consists of entertainment, sports, news, acting shows and others), radio, newspapers, books and the internet. In today's world, you can't look around you without some form of media that's shaped your or someone else's life. What kind of shirt are you wearing? What's the brand name? Did you buy that shirt because of the brand? Finally the media is a fashion statement. For example, lets look at Shaun White (who is sponsored by Burton). Although many people may dislike like Mr. White, he gets a lot of television attention. When Shaun rides and wears Burton gear, people notice that, which results in more products being bought from Burton. Everyone is a consumer.

  1. This, of course, is true for the mass but completely bewildering to me. It's like the rush many years ago away from wooden tennis racquets because the technology was possible? because media tennis stars were moving to non-wood racquets? because it was the new tennis fad? I had this epiphany once. Playing on the last court of a long string of courts, I looked down the courts. Everyone's racquet was flashing. No one had dull wood anymore. There were straight metal (like Jimmy Connors); there were oversized ones, graphite and maybe a titanium or two. What was funny was that the tennis was like tennis 5 years before when there was no flashing and it was all wood. Still people had patty cake serves, blew backhands over the fence, duffed overheads into the net. The tennis was the same; only the racquets weren't. Why people think a Brand will transform them somehow into the sponsor of the brand is beyond me. Maybe though, if I wear Burton, I can be like Shaun White in at least some way . . . !!!\
